After damage to the hippocampal memory system, patients tend to lose more of their recent than of their remote memories. This pattern is referred to as the Ribot gradient. One explanation for the gradient of memory loss is consolidation theory of long-term memories. However, the consolidation theory cannot explain the retrograde amnesia for more than 25 yr. We describe here a case of disproportionate retrograde amnesia for the past 35 yr following herpes encephalitis. |
